Hello:
My name is Andrew Null. I have four passions in life. I love to fly fish, woodwork, call turkeys, and hunt. I will show a fishing picture on this page only to demonstrate that when I really like doing something, I put my heart and soul in to learning how to do it. Besides this is a website about turkey calls, I will leave fishing for another time.
My dad always told me as a kid that it was a great feeling when you made a call on a turkey call and you got an answer back. He was right. Oh boy was he right.
This all started when I was a young guy (not that I am old now), I went spring gobbler hunting for the first time with a buddy in my home state of Pennsylvania. We were still in high school, so we went out spring gobbler hunting one Saturday morning during the Pennsylvania spring gobbler season.
Neither of us really knew what we were doing. My buddy made a few calls on a box call and low and behold we both shot a jake. I freely admit it was beginners’ luck, but it caused me to get the fever. Looking back on it we could have probably called in those two jakes by sneezing, they were so hot. But none the less this started my passion for turkey calling.
Fast forward a few years and I began to build some pot calls. I really enjoyed making them but being in college working towards a mechanical engineering degree did not leave much time. Besides, I was away at college and had no place to build them.
Not to rush life but fast forward again a few years and I find myself home from college. My dad and I wanted to put together a wood shop in a building we had in the back yard. I started to work. I cleaned out the building and I began to set things up. My dad had compiled a lot of woodworking tools in anticipation of the wood shop becoming a reality.
Not long after I readied the wood shop, I found myself tinkering with scratch boxes due to a great friend introducing me to them. We spent a night in the woodshop building double sided scratch boxes until 2:00 in the morning. I began to try new calls with the scratch boxes besides basic cutting and yelping. I was able to tune the scratch boxes and along with some practice I was able to produce a hen waking up on the limb, a fly down cackle, and my most favorite a kee kee run.
So that is my story in a nutshell. I love building turkey calls. I am blessed to have found the three things I am passionate about doing. I am blessed to have such supportive friends and family. Please become part of my story. Not because I want to get rich but because building turkey calls and turkey calling is some of the greatest enjoyment there is. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
